Removal Process

Using state-of-the-art equipment and safe industry techniques, we complete each project efficiently and effectively, preventing damage to surrounding areas and leaving your lawn looking better than before.

Arrive at Site

Most stump removal projects are completed in one day. After the quote process, our team will arrange a date and time to remove your stump and repair your lawn. The process includes three teams that arrive at the work site one at a time. The first team grinds the stump. The second team cleans the site. And the final team soils and seeds the treatment site.

Cut Stump

Tall stumps may require an additional cut before the grinding process. This shorter cut reduces the amount of subsequent stump mulch and makes the entire process more efficient.

Position Grinder

The stump grinding machine is positioned near the stump. Its special rubber tires distribute the machine's weight evenly so that your lawn is unaffected. In particularly wet or difficult conditions, lawn sheets may be placed on the lawn to prevent any damage from the machine's tires.

Safety Shields

Screens are set around the stump removal site to aid safety and cleanliness. As a barrier of protection, the screens also prevent wood chip debris from being scattered around the surrounding areas.

Grind Stump

A spinning disc, made of special tungsten carbide "teeth," cuts into the stump in a sweeping motion, grinding the stump into small wood chips.

Remove Stump

With each sweep of the machine, the stump is ground further into the earth until the desired depth is reached. Inch by inch, the process is repeated from the top of the stump until the entire stump has been removed.

Remove Root System

The stump and visible surface roots (or root flare) are ground 6-8" below the surrounding grade for lawn installs or 12-16" below grade for shrub or tree replanting. These depths allow for necessary re-turfing or re-planting in their respective areas. Upon request, this depth can be increased for more extensive root extraction.

Remove Mulch

After stump grinding, a mixture of wood chips, soil, and rocks remain. This stump debris or mulch can be left onsite, cleaned up (removed and hauled offsite), or relocated on the property to a composting area.

Clean & Repair

Following mulch removal, the site may be soiled and seeded to ensure that no signs remain of your former stump.

  • What are your business hours?

    We work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

  • How do you remove the stumps?

    A stump grinder machine turns the stump and its main root system below the surface of the earth into a mixture of wood chips and soil that can then be removed.

  • How deep do you grind? What depth is best for my lawn?

    There are two main depth options for most stump removal projects. A shallow grind (6-8") is the best option if you would like to cover the treated area with grass. A deep grind (12-16") is recommended if the existing stump wil be replaced with a new tree or shrub.

  • Can your crew remove the debris from the area after stump grinding?

    Absolutely! Some customers choose to have us leave the subsequent woodchips after grinding in a tidy pile inside the hole of the former stump for no additional cost. This mulch is often desired for flowerbed gardening. But we are happy to remove the subsequent debris and plant grass and/or another tree or shrub at the site for an additional fee. 

  • Will your machine damage my lawn?

    No.  Our stump grinding machine (~2,500 lbs) is significantly lighter than a skid steer or excavator (~6,500-8,500 lbs). The machine also runs on 6 wheels that evenly distributes its weight and prevents any sinking of the machine that might damage your lawn.

  • Will you damage surrounding areas or throw debris toward cars, houses, or people?

    No. We use protective guards to ensure that wood chips or rocks are contained in a tight area, protecting surrounding lawn areas and preventing any flying debris from escaping the site. 

  • How many stumps can we reasonably expect your crew to grind in one day?

    The number of stumps to be grinded in a day will depend on the size, age, and location of the stumps.  If we are able to grind multiple stumps without loading, unloading, and transporting our machine, then productivity will be greater than if we spend a significant portion of the day moving to varous sites.   

  • Is your machine more or less productive than a skid steer with a stump grinder attachment?

    Our stump grinding machine is significantly more productive than a skid steer with an attachment because it directs more horsepower into the cutting wheel than a skid steer.  This machine also ensures a cleaner grind process in which debris is limited to a small area.
